Zouk's Time Machine: From The Biggest Club in Malaysia to a Mamak Shop?
Updated on:
24 January 2024As KL’s nightlife scene embarks on an exciting wave of super-clubs such as Pitt Club, X-Paze, SpaceOne, Space Plus, H-Club, and the Arch rumoured to feature a brand new Spark Club, let’s look back at arguably one of the most iconic clubs to ever operate in our vibrant capital city, Zouk. Originating from our neighbouring country, Singapore, the Zouk brand resonates with every partygoer in Malaysia and beyond, and has crossed borders to far corners of the party world in entertainment hubs such as Las Vegas, Tokyo, and soon Los Angeles. Zouk KL was not just a nightclub; it was a chronicle of the country’s vibrant nightlife history. Its journey is akin to a time machine, taking us through the evolution of clubbing culture in Kuala Lumpur, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a nightlife icon.
Zouk KL’s Beginnings: Inspired by Singapore’s Iconic Zouk
The Early Days: A Vision Inspired by Singapore’s Zouk
The story of Zouk KL begins in the streets of Jalan Ampang, inspired by the original Zouk club in Singapore, a beacon of nightlife in Asia. This inspiration led to the birth of a new clubbing experience in Malaysia, one that promised to revolutionize the local nightlife scene. Zouk KL’s early days were marked by an innovative spirit, drawing in crowds eager for a taste of world-class entertainment and cutting-edge music.
Relocation and Growth: Moving to Jalan Tun Razak
The face of Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife was forever changed in 2015 when Zouk KL relocated to the Trec area on Jalan Tun Razak. This move was necessitated by redevelopment plans in its original Jalan Ampang location. The new venue offered more space and scope for creative expression, allowing Zouk KL to expand its offerings and cement its position as a leader in the nightlife industry.
Zouk had 7 different rooms that and each room offered its own kind of ambience, music and vibe.
- Zouk Main Room: The heart of Zouk KL, featuring an altar-like console, massive arrays of LED and visual displays, and a custom-built truss for lighting above the dance floor.
- Beer Garden: An alfresco space adjacent to the Zouk Cafe Bar, offering a breathy view of TREC’s Electric Boulevard plaza.
- Ace: A cool Hip-Hop club accessible from the Zouk Main Room, with an island bar and banquette alcoves around the perimeter.
- Phuture: Featuring futuristic décor and a suspended track hoisting dancers around the dance floor in a Cirque du Soleil fashion.
- Velvet Underground: Posh interiors for a discerning clientele, with a luxurious three-dimensional tartan pattern at the DJ console.
- Apex Lounge: Offering a spectacular view of the streetscape on Jalan Tun Razak through a 5m floor-to-ceiling glass window.
- Imperial: An exclusive lounge with password-activated private lift access from the basement carpark, an impressive bar adorned with glowing Dom Pérignon bottles, an impressive whisky collection and access to a private balcony.
A Legacy Left Behind: The Transformation of the Original Site
While Zouk KL thrived in its new location, the original site at Jalan Ampang didn’t fade into obscurity. Instead, it transformed into something equally beloved by the locals – the famous Mamak store “Pelita.” This transition is a testament to the ever-changing and adaptive nature of Kuala Lumpur’s urban landscape.
Zouk Genting: A New Era of Nightlife at Resorts World Genting
Opened on May 19, 2019, Zouk Genting brought a vibrant nightlife experience to Resorts World Genting. This modern club, set in the stunning Genting Highlands, features a main room which focuses primarily on EDM, a hip-hop / Open format club called Empire, a gaming bar called RedTail, and their most recent addition Ayu Awana located in the cool, lush ancient rainforests of Genting Highlands in Resorts World Awana, offering an unmatched party atmosphere in Malaysia’s popular resort destination.
Spark taking over Zouk KL
When the COVID-19 pandemic led to prolonged lockdowns in Malaysia, the renowned Zouk nightclub was unfortunately forced to close its doors. This challenging period, however, paved the way for a fresh beginning. Spark, seizing the opportunity, took over the iconic location previously occupied by Zouk. With this strategic move, Spark breathed new energy into Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife scene, transforming the space into a vibrant hub for entertainment and social gatherings, and marking a new era in the city’s nightlife history.
Spark is currently one of the most popular nightlife destinations in town, but its dominance has been challenged by the emergence of new players in the market such as Pitt Club, as well as changing trends such as the rise of popularity among smaller intimate venues. We eagerly await to see the next chapter of KL’s nightlife unfold with the introduction of new super clubs in town, offering ever more options and new possibilities for our beautiful city and its partygoers!
